USVI Chess Association
Empowering Chess Players Young and Old
The goal of the USVI Chess Association has always been to replace a small circle of privilege with a large circle of opportunity. We have never wanted to be anything more than a catalyst for positive change. We have been called “The VI Chess Freedom Fighters” by chess tournament directors across the United States who have held tournaments in support of us. We are pioneers, clearing a path for a legitimate democratic equitable journey forward.

After more than a year of failed mediation attempts to convert the USVI Chess Federation and the USVI Chess Association into one democratic organization, we are again separated by the confines of ongoing litigation.

In a hearing on May 22, 2025, Judge Brady listened attentively to both sides of the controversy. He pointed out where we went wrong in our special election of new officers. He also pointed out that the Constitution & Bylaws of the Margaret Murphy administration effectively creates a self-perpetuating Board of Administration and eliminates any options for members to hold the Board accountable. In other words, the Board is its own governor in this respect and members have no recourse.

After enumerating the many flaws within the current USVICF Constitution & Bylaws, Judge Brady ordered that a new election be held and completed within 90 days. When the details of a new election of officers are shared with us, we will share them publicly here on our website.
We encourage all VI chess players and chess supporters (parents & spouses of players) to stay tuned and vote!
